Having worked in precision machining for over ten years, I have used several Brass Wire Cut EDM machines. Recently our company needed a machine capable of machining large molds. With a limited budget, imported machines were out of the question, so we focused on domestic high‑end models. After visiting several manufacturers and studying a lot of information, I‘d like to share my method for judging “value for money” and one machine that made it onto our shortlist – the NOVICK AW600. This is purely an experience‑based share, not an advertisement, for the benefit of others who are also in the selection process.
What I Mean by “Value for Money” Is Not Just a Low Price
Many people think value for money equals a low price. But as an actual user, I care more about:
1.With the same amount of money, how much machining capability (travel, load capacity, accuracy) can I get?
2.With the same amount of money, how much later‑stage cost (consumables, labor, downtime) can I save?
3.With the same amount of money, how much trouble (reliability of automatic wire threading, after‑sales speed) can I save?
Simply put: Performance / Price = Value for Money. And “performance” here should be long‑term, stable performance.
Why Did I Start Paying Attention to the NOVICK AW600?
To be honest, I used to have doubts about domestic brands. But after looking at the specifications and actual cases of the NOVICK AW600, I felt it was worth a serious look. Here are my notes.

1. First, Look at the Hard Specifications: How Much Can It Handle?
·Travel: 600×400×360 mm
·Maximum load capacity: 800 kg
·Work tank size: 1100×850×420 mm
This means that our large stamping dies and automotive parts can be machined in a single setup without repeated clamping. Compared to other models in the same price range (many have only 400×300 travel and around 500 kg load capacity), the AW600 saves a lot of errors and man‑hours simply by allowing single‑setup machining.
2. Next, Accuracy: Is It Sufficient?
For the precision molds we make, the tolerance requirement is generally around ±0.01 mm. The AW600’s data:
·Positioning accuracy: 0.005 mm
·Repeat positioning accuracy: 0.003 mm
·Dimensional accuracy when cutting 20 mm thick Cr12: ≤6 μm (0.006 mm)
·Surface roughness: Ra ≤0.45 μm; with a finishing module, Ra ≤0.25 μm
This is clearly better than our requirements, with margin. A surface roughness of Ra 0.25 μm is more than enough for connector molds and medical parts.
3. Then, Automatic Wire Threading: Can I Trust It for Night Shifts?
The main reason for buying new equipment is to reduce manual intervention. The AW600‘s AWF system is quite comprehensive:
·Automatic wire burning, automatic wire threading
·Automatic wire breakage detection
·Automatic return to the breakpoint for re‑threading (up to 9 bending and retraction actions)
·Automatic waste wire recovery
With the breakpoint return function, if the wire breaks during the night, the machine can re‑thread itself and continue cutting, eliminating the need to rush to the factory in the middle of the night. This is very important for batch production.

4. Discharge Control: How Is the Surface Quality?
The AW600 uses AC electrolysis‑free machining technology. Simply put, the cut surface has less electrolytic corrosion and fewer micro‑cracks. Anyone who works with molds knows how much this affects mold life and polishing workload. The manufacturer says the system monitors each discharge pulse in real time and dynamically adjusts energy to reduce the risk of wire breakage – this is something I will verify during the trial cut.
5. Is the Software Easy to Use?
Windows 10 platform, supports ISO programming, 3D trajectory inspection, real‑time parameter modification, corner adaptive processing, small‑arc compensation. Our existing operators are familiar with Fanuc systems; the interface is similar, so the learning curve should not be steep. Being able to modify offsets and parameters during machining without stopping to re‑program is quite convenient.
6. Wire Drive and Water Treatment: Attention to Detail
·Two‑stage constant tension control: Stable wire tension means fewer breakages and stable accuracy.
·Tank system: 5 μm filtration accuracy, constant‑temperature cooling, automatic water quality control – all critical for long, continuous machining.

7. Price: How Much Exactly?
I cannot disclose a specific quote here, as configurations vary from customer to customer. However, I can tell you that the AW600‘s price is significantly lower than that of imported machines with comparable specifications, and it is within a reasonable range for domestic high‑end models. I have done a rough calculation: if the machine can run night shifts reliably, with a low wire breakage rate and fast after‑sales response, its total cost of ownership is much better than that of our current old imported machine.
My Next Steps
At the moment, the AW600 is at the top of my evaluation list. Next, I will:
1.Contact NOVICK and request a trial cut using our own workpieces.
2.During the trial cut, pay close attention to cutting time, wire wear, whether any breakage occurs, and surface finish.
3.Ask to visit one or two existing long‑term customers in the area to hear about their actual experience.
4.Compare the after‑sales terms and spare parts prices.
If the trial cut results are satisfactory, I will most likely choose it.

Some Advice for Those Also in the Selection Process
Do not rely solely on the parameters in brochures. Value for money must be verified by trial cut results and long‑term operating costs. I suggest you:
·List the 3 to 5 types of workpieces you most frequently machine (dimensions, materials, accuracy requirements).
·Bring them to the manufacturer for a trial cut and record the real data.
·Calculate: purchase price + one year‘s consumable costs + estimated labor cost – estimated output value.
That is the only way to get a true picture of “value for money.”
